CONTENT

History of Basketball in Nigeria

Basketball was invented in Massachusetts, U.S.A. by Dr James Naismith in 1891. The Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) is in charge of the game internationally and was founded in 1932. The game became an Olympic sport in 1936 (Berlin Olympic Games). Since its creation, the game has become a popular sport in many countries of the world. The game was introduced into Nigeria in the early 1950s and the first organised basketball game was said to have been played in 1964. Today, the game is gaining much ground in universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and even post-primary and primary schools.
